Could there have been a different ending where he survived, and could he and SW have developed a closer relationship?

It occurs to me that it might be one of those zodiac plushies? That means the pic must be from 2016, Year of the Monkey. I have posted some of those from other years in a New Year post before. That picspam even contains pics of him in that very sweater vest, but it never occurred to me to conclude the year from that. Ooops. I think I'll amend that New Year post, just for my own reference. :D
